Enrollment for the 2020-2022 University Interscholastic League divisions has been revealed, and 2-6A will see at least one change. Amarillo Tascosa, the lone Amarillo school currently in 6A, will drop down to the 5A level. The rest of the district will remain at 6A.
Enrollment numbers for 6A for 2020-2022 were set to start at 2,220 and above. Tascosa submitted a count of 2,186, placing them 34 students below the 6A level. As a result Tascosa will drop to 5A Division 1.
Other school totals for 2-6A's current schools:
Midland High- 3,234
Midland Lee- 3,199
Odessa High- 3,926
Permian- 3,738
Wolfforth Frenship- 2,772
UiL will announce the new district alignments February 3, 2020. It is believed that 2-6A will continue to host these five schools. However both Abilene High (2,288) and San Angelo Central (3,087) will likely be looked at by UiL as possible additions to 2-6A.
The excuse given by UiL for San Angelo Central's removal from 2-6A the past two seasons was the distance from San Angelo to Amarillo for sports outside of football. With no Amarillo schools now meeting that critera, Central will certainly be looked at.
As far as Abilene High goes, it'll depend largely on how many schools UiL wishes to place in 3-6A.
So are we assured that these schools will remain 2-6A? The answer is no. However with 8 El Paso area schools qualifying for 6A, it is believed they will all be placed in one district (1-6A) to alleviate travel concerns. As the next furthest west group, the Permian Basin schools will likely then receive the 2-6A designation.
Either way February 3 is the next date to keep an eye on to see whom all the district will contain.
