2-5A head-to-head Tiebreaker (with current standings):
Odessa 2-1 vs. Abilene, Permian, & Midland (OHS def. Permian & Midland, lost to Abilene)
Midland 1-1 vs. Odessa, Permian, & Abilene (Midland def. Permian, lost to OHS)
Abilene 1-1 vs. Odessa, Permian, & Midland (Abilene def. OHS, lost to Permian)
Permian 1-2 vs. Odessa, Abilene, & Midland (Permian def. Abilene, lost to OHS & Midland)

Looking into Week 10:
Odessa High at Amarillo Tascosa
Lubbock Coronado at Permian
Abilene at Midland
Midland Lee at San Angelo Central
BYE- ABILENE COOPER

Abilene at Midland will be the key game to determine the fourth playoff team from the district. Here's what I know regarding the tiebreakers.

IF MIDLAND HIGH WINS
If Midland High, OHS, and Permian all win, OHS makes the playoffs by right of a 2-0 record against the other two.

If Midland High and Permian win but OHS loses, then Midland makes the playoffs by right of their win over Permian.

If Odessa High and Midland win but Permian loses, OHS makes the playoffs by right of their win over Midland.

IF ABILENE HIGH WINS
If Abilene, OHS and Permian win, they all went 1-1 against each other. Point differential will determine who advances. There is a 15-point cap on each game, and only district games vs. those on the tie-breaker count towards it.

Current point differences:
Permian: +7
Abilene: +5
Odessa: -12
Permian would advance by point differential.

If Abilene and OHS win but Permian loses, Abilene advances by right of their win over OHS.

If Abilene and Permian win but OHS loses, Permian advances by right of their win over Abilene.

If both OHS and Permian lose next week, the winner of Abilene/ Midland advances unopposed.

As for the district championship, it's really simple. Midland Lee has clinched at least a share of the district title. If they defeat Central, they win it outright. If Central wins, Lee and Central will split the district title.

  1. The only games that count towards the point differentials are games against each other. The other district games against the other opponents do not count. To figure out these point differentials between Abilene, Permian, and Odessa; you must take into account only the Abilene vs Permian, Abilene vs Odessa, and Permian vs Odessa games. When figure it this way which is in accordance to district by-laws, Abilene is +5, Permian is +7, and Odessa is -12. In addition, There is no way to change the differentials since all three matches have been completed; which is unfortunate for this Abilene High alum. If the three all win next week, Permian advances by two points.

    1. As I told Chris Gove earlier, thank you for the update an,d in this case correction. I have updated the tiebreaker scenario to show the correction.

Basically OHS can only make the playoffs if Midland High wins, Permian can only make the playoffs if Abilene wins, Midland can only make the playoffs if Odessa High loses, and Abilene can only make the playoffs if Permian loses. Confusing enough yet?

    2. I never saw another individual informing you of an update and/or correction. I was directed to this blog via the 5atxfootball.com forums about an hour before writing the above.

    3. Your last paragraph is 100% correct and in simpler terms than I've seen from other sources. Odessa winning last night over Midland was bad for Abilene even though Abilene beat Odessa and goes against Midland next week. Abilene loses any 3 way tie now and could have won a 3 way tie if Midland won yesterday.

    4. Chris Gove is the head sports writer/editor for the Odessa American. If you came on when I first wrote this yesterday, I had down that I think point differential is the tiebreaker it would go to. He confirmed (via Twitter) that it was point differential that was the second tiebreaker and was the one who told me there was a 15-point cap on the games.
